CERT members are needed for traffic control during Ashland's wildfire evacuation drill. Ashland CERT is not only assisting the simulation; we are part of it!
This opportunity is for Ashland CERT members only.
On Saturday October 11, Ashland will conduct a city-wide Wildfire Evacuation Drill during which its populace will actually evacuate. Ashland CERT's role is to facilitate the debriefing operation, which is one aspect of the drill. This operation is for the volunteer evacuees who wish to provide to the city important feedback on how the evacuation went.
Specifically, CERT will direct traffic (consisting of residents who choose to participate) through an assembly-line operation:
- Direct volunteer evacuees in
- Distribute a questionnaire to each vehicle
- Route traffic to (A) a loitering area (during which volunteer evacuees can complete the questionnaire without exiting their vehicles)
- Optionally route traffic to (B) an exit lane (so they can complete the questionnaire electronically elsewhere)
- Offer access to a parking area (C) (so volunteer evacuees can participate in deeper information-sharing with subject matter experts and officials)
- Collect questionnaires from volunteer evacuate
This function will be at Ashland's municipal airport (0.5 mile up Dead Indian Memorial Road). Our specific function will be similar to the COVID-19 drive-through that we supported five years ago: slow-speed traffic direction and management in a large parking-lot-like space, plus a small amount of interaction with vehicles' occupants. Folks, this is going to be fun! And rewarding, since we'll get to hear first-hand what our city's first-ever evacuation drill participants thought of it!
Wear your CERT vest. Bring water, snack if desired, and weather- and sun-appropriate clothing (of course). Radios will be provided.
